Here is a Cup of Tea, Passionately Yours. A Plantation renowned for making light bright teas with a strong aroma and flavour unique to the Nuwara Eliya region. | Walking through the tea fields on the division called Lover's Leap means stepping on the very soil James Taylor, the pioneer tea planter of the country, walked on, when he bought the land in the late 19th century. A short journey from the Pedro factory on the Nuwara Eliya Hatton road brings you to the Mahagastotte Upper and Lower Divisions. History hangs over these acre upon acre of tea as heavily as the white gray mist. The road itself shares memories of the day the Duke of Edingborouh drove himself and the Queen all the way i from the Governor's House to Pedro on a sunny morning in April, 1954. Not only would they spend the day on the estate but the night . too, in the Manager's bungalow with its quaint fireplaces and cosy rooms undoubtedly reminding them of an English manor house.

The new art of tea... The name inverness was inherited by a Scottish Planter who found the hills around the Plantation reminiscent of his beloved homeland in the Scottish highlands The green blanket of tea bushes engulfing the Neepili- mana mountains has the ability of producing leafy teas as well as small leaf grades bearing light bright character. The vast terrain that inludes the precipice is covered with bushes of VP tea that yield the flowery BOP teas bearing the Inverness mark. Little would Shakespeare have thought when he called Macbeth's castle in “The Tragedy of Macbeth”, Inverness that one day in the 20th century in far off Sri Lanka there would be a brand of tea known by the same name. These Teas are grown at an elevation of 2, 400 Metres above Sea Level and denote a light and bright cup with a mellow flavour. The Strategic location of the estate in the border of Nuwara Eliya and Dimbula, offers a nice balance of character of both regions while the Tea in itself contains a sharp taste that is unique to its garden.

From Edina, with love Famous for producing some of the finest high grown leafy teas of flavour, with a light yellow cup colour, these teas enjoy an abundance of monsoon drizzle. Sheltering in the shade of the factory, with the ancient weighing machines and Dickinson surroundings, it is hard not to pray to the weather gods, begging them to lift this vail and reveal the picturesque mountains covered in field upon field of tea, which the gods so enviously seem to guard. Perhaps the best view of Edinburgh is visible, not from the factory but from a train, heading from Nanu Oya to Badulla. As Henry Cave wrote in the “Book of Ceylon”, in 1908, the winding curves from Nanu Oya and beyond are a part of “the most spectacular pass of all” on the upcountry railway track. Today, when the mist, silently, grudgingly, lifts in the mid afternoon, a walk among the tea fields of the upper and lower divisions, in ominous silence, for the squirrels and the birds seem reluctant yet to leave their cosy dwellings, make you realize the pioneering spirits of the English planters have given way to a more serene ambience. You make your way back to the factory seeking warmth and companionship. A warm cup of Edinburgh tea, freshly brewed and as enchanting as the Capital of Scotland, fulfills all your expectations.

The Flavor of Moon Dust on Dew Dappled Magnolias. Enjoying the winds across the Kikiliyamana Mountains, the tea fields of Uda Radella estate is famous for producing light flavoury teas during the Western quality season and teas with colour and strength during the off season. Harmony melts into harmony. Murmuring and moanful at first, the oeuvre of the wind rushing through the delicate tea bushes gradually rises to a crescendo. A Brew that best befits the manor born. Though the coffee on Glassaugh and the nearby estates would soon be replaced with tea, the planters' lives Trollope describes in his letter, remains almost unchanged, to this day. Today, the tea land that is Glassaugh, with her mystical mists and shrouded mountains, shifting light and playful shadows, sweeping across uninhibited streams, and pathless woods that seem to stretch the land forever, produces tea that would please the palate of the most fussy connoisseur. Famous for producing light and bright liquors, this tea is ideally drunk without milk with a dash of lemon.

Nothing but the truth The oldest registered operational tea factory in Sri Lanka, now producing Green Teas with the famous Nuwara Eliya character has been modified to produce Orthodox types of big leaf Green teas. The Oliphant garden is situated in the central hills of Nuwara Eliya region at an elevation of 1,740 Meters above Sea Level. The cool mountain air, the lush surrounding plantations and the dry winds combined together form ideal conditions for Oliphant Green Tea. When Sir Oliphant and Laurence came to this piece of highland, filled with “Ashoka’' trees, elephants, wild animals and gem stones as Dr. Davy described it, they brought with them thirty tea plants smuggled from China. To this day the young rays of the sun who, out of sheer respect for the magnificence of the bungalow do not step through the numerous windows to brighten the rooms inside, The tea bushes known as China Jat, are dating back to the mid nineteenth century. This Tea opens up in the tea pot when it meets the water, thus inventing a green garden within.

Refreshing in every sense. “An Enormous Price for Ceylon Tea” said The Pall Mall Budget of March 13th 1891. ‘Unusual excitement prevailed on Tuesday in Mincing Lane, on the offering by Messrs Gow, Wilson and Stanton, tea-brokers, in public auction, of a small lot of Ceylon tea... This tea " possesses extraordinary quality in liquor, and is composed almost ‘ entirely of small ‘golden tips’, which are the extreme ends of the small succulent shoots of the plant, and the preparation of such tea, is, of course, most costly... The bidding which was pretty general to if start with, commenced with an offer of £1.1s per 1lb...the tea ultimately knocked down to the ‘Mazawatte Ceylon Tea Company’ at the most extraordinary and unprecedented price of £10.12s per ‘Ib.’ The Planter behind this “small lot of Ceylon Tea” was T. C Anderson who was the Agent of Annfield Estate, Hatton in the late 19th Century. Home to one of the most northerly remnants of the mighty tropical forests that once covered 80% of these highlands, nestling at the foot of the steep slopes of the Bogawanthalawa valley, Annfield is a quiet glen dotted with tea fields, cypress trees and rows of roadside marigolds dancing in the soft breeze, under a vast, changing sky. Here is a charming wilderness of austere rock-hewn landscapes, of windswept summits.

Great tea for great encounters. It takes a special alchemy for a great cup of tea to come into being: the intensity of an ardent sun, a soft and welcome rain and a rich, generous earth that nurtures the tea leaves into a perfect texture. It is only then, after carefully juggling a delicate balance of science and instinct, that the secrets of the leaves, the rhythms of the seasons and the unmistakable perfumes of the strands of jasmine, the roadside roses and wild chrysan- themums, finally yield a truly memorable cup of tea. Behind each cup of Batalgila tea is an unmatched story of dedication and persistence and the good news is the management on Batalgalla is pleased to share them with you through their tea. Who knows, you may even be able to visualize the stories of the pioneer planters on Battalgalla whose lives remain covered by the mists of time, in your cup of tea.

From the Land of the Iron Duke. The morning air brings chills across the Dickoya Valley. Trees shake as the mist flirts with the young rays of the sun. Puffs of clouds rise from the mouths of the visitors, as they breathe in the rejuvenating gusts, only to disappear from sight within a few seconds. The quiet breath of the mountains and the distance siren summoning the workers for the Muster, are all that is heard. The main peak of the mountain lies ahead while two other peaks stand guard on the left and the right. Behind the mountain ridge-line to the right lies an open meadow covered with tea. The gap between the two peaks reveals yet another breathtaking view of more and more fields of tea. Surrounded by crystalline waterfalls, blue-green streams and sunlight, the Fordyce Estate today, seemingly merges the past and the present with effortless grace. Keeping a benign eye on the fields of tea are Adam's Peak in the far distance

For those who know the flavor of commitment. Ingestre Tea Garden plays host to the famed Adam’s Peak Mountains in the Fordyce Valley at an elevation of 1,440 Meters above Sea Level. The Teas that are produced by Ingestre have a neat leaf style and a well-rounded flavor in its brew. Unlike most other estates in the Dickoya valley with their Scottish names, a particular set of tea fields boasts of an English name, | apparently christened after the village of Ingestry in Wales, England. One of the first British planters to set foot on this stretch of land in the late 19th century was William Cameron, who sailed to Ceylon having worked in the tea estates of India. It is said that “he improved the local system of pruning and plucking as to show a wonderful difference in increased crop returns,” encour- . aging other planters to cultivate tea on a large scale. The tea contains a distinct Dimbula aftertaste long after you swallow, along with a strong taste and coloury appearance. This Tea can be consumed with or without Milk The teas manufactured with the rotor-vane machines, give abundance of colour and strength ideal for tea bags.

Mostly cultivated with “VP” tea, this plantation produces tea with thick coloury liquors from the Dimbula plantation areas of Sri Lanka which is ideally drunk with milk. At the Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in London in 1886, which saw the participation of forty countries, Tillyrie was awarded the Third Order of Merit. This was followed by a certificate awarded in 1889 by the United States of America “for good preparation of leaf and fine quality of the infusion” in the Tillyrie mark. To this day the certificates adorn the walls of the Tillyrie factory that continues to manufacture tea which according to the Ceylon Observer are “whole- some teas, ..that cannot be found anywhere on the world’s surface” Tillyrie — for those who know the best.

The mark of harmony. A plantation famous for producing Clonal type small leaf low grown teas. Well rolled, black in appearance, the BOP and BOPF grades produced by Kelani Estate are hard to match. Sweet coloury liquors are produced in small quantities ensuring the quality is maintained right throughout the year. Today, the casual visitor to the Kelani Estate would observe, how the stone walls of the bungalow, the fountain with the soothing song of water nymphs, the solitary mynah hoping around the lawn, the anthuriums smiling up at the sun from the front verandah, combine to create a “living landscape” of the past, in the most romantic, picturesque style imaginable. As you sip a cup of Kelani BOP Special, with the silent, brawny Halgolla mountains standing vigil in the distance, lush with blossoming flora and expanses of rolling green, you get a true sense of “the fresh and natural surface of planet Earth.” Rocks, hills, trees, the wind on your cheeks and a cup of tea in your hands, here is “the solid earth! the actual world!”

Alluring Frangipani. Low grown teas from the Sabaragamuwa region with sweet malty liquors are produced by this plantation. Producing well made wiry teas, these teas are well sought after by many overseas buyers. Registered as the Ederapolla Tea Company of Ceylon on 2nd November, 1895, the company had had four Directors, Records reveal “the Prospectus was dated 3rd December, 1895, and stated that the Company was formed to purchase and work, as from the 1st January, 1896, the going concerns known as Ederapolla and Ardross Estates. As you walk around the Ederapolla Estate you will often see nothing but green thickets of tea, slender but hardy barks of rubber in whose shade ferns, mosses and orchids thrive. Not surprisingly there is something mystical about the tea made on Edera- polla. Here's the soul-cleansing smell of frangipani in your cup of tea.
